Background of the Study
Waste-to-energy (WtE) initiatives have emerged as innovative solutions for managing solid waste while generating renewable energy. In Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, the implementation of WtE projects is increasingly viewed as a pathway toward sustainable development (Akinola, 2023). These initiatives aim to reduce landfill waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and provide an alternative energy source for local communities. Despite their potential, the effectiveness of WtE projects in contributing to sustainable development has been met with both enthusiasm and skepticism. Critics argue that technological, financial, and regulatory challenges may hinder their impact (Balogun, 2024). Recent research indicates that when effectively implemented, WtE systems can significantly contribute to local economies, improve waste management practices, and reduce environmental degradation (Olatunji, 2025). This study explores the socio-economic and environmental implications of waste-to-energy initiatives in Ilesa East. It examines the integration of these systems into local infrastructure, assesses public acceptance, and identifies the critical success factors necessary for long-term sustainability. By bridging technical, policy, and community perspectives, the research seeks to provide a holistic evaluation of WtE’s role in fostering sustainable development (Akinola, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the promise of waste-to-energy initiatives, Ilesa East continues to face challenges in solid waste management and sustainable energy production. The implementation of WtE projects has encountered technological and financial constraints, limiting their overall effectiveness and public acceptance (Olatunji, 2025). There is a need to evaluate the actual impact of these initiatives on sustainable development and to understand the factors that impede their success. This study aims to address the gap between the theoretical benefits and practical outcomes of WtE initiatives (Balogun, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the performance of waste-to-energy initiatives in Ilesa East.
To assess the contribution of WtE projects to sustainable development.
To recommend strategies to overcome implementation challenges.
Research Questions:
What are the operational challenges faced by WtE projects in Ilesa East?
How do WtE initiatives contribute to sustainable development?
What improvements can enhance the effectiveness of WtE systems?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: WtE initiatives in Ilesa East significantly reduce waste accumulation.
H2: WtE projects contribute positively to local energy sustainability.
H3: Overcoming technological barriers will enhance WtE project performance.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of waste-to-energy initiatives in promoting sustainable development. Its findings will inform policymakers and investors on how to optimize WtE systems to achieve environmental and economic benefits, ensuring that the local community reaps long-term advantages (Akinola, 2023; Olatunji, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the impact of waste-to-energy initiatives on sustainable development in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State. The study excludes conventional waste management practices and other renewable energy sources.
Definitions of Terms:
Waste-to-Energy (WtE): A process that converts municipal waste into usable energy.
Sustainable Development: Development that meets present needs without compromising future generations.
Renewable Energy: Energy derived from natural processes that are continuously replenished.
